New Industrial Biotechnology Strategy launched to secure UK leadership in clean growth

National Industrial Biotechnology Strategy to 2030 front cover

Today the Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum (IBLF) launches the new ‘National Industrial Biotechnology Strategy to 2030’, promoted in partnership with the UK BioIndustry Association (BIA). The Strategy has been developed by the IBLF and two BBSRC NIBB, CBMNet and BIOCATNET.

The National Industrial Biotechnology Strategy to 2030 aims to ensure that the UK becomes a leader in the global shift towards clean growth by fostering the development of industrial biotechnology SMEs. It will be launched at an event in Parliament on Wednesday 6 June organised by the BIA and hosted by Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge. The event brings together industry, academia and policymakers to discuss how the UK industrial biotechnology sector can solve many environmental problems by promoting clean growth and reducing waste, such as oil-based plastics by creating biodegradable alternatives.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (IBBE) Showcase and Pitch Event is an opportunity for entrepreneurs with start-up, early stage and growth businesses to increase their profile in front of a national audience of investors. The pitching competition is organised jointly by CBMNet, BIOCATNET & the Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) and is a unique opportunity for both entrepreneurs and investors to gain valuable insight.

Developing a Strategy for Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy in the UK

In March 2017 RSM was commissioned by a consortium of four BBSRC NIBB, acting on behalf of the members of all 13 networks, to produce a report on the UK’s industrial biotechnology landscape. The report is available in full here and summary here.

The report was launched on the 31st October at an invited event held in Sheffield and attended by almost 90 delegates drawn from academia, industry, and other key stakeholders. We will be working in the coming months to engage further with those people and other stakeholders who weren’t able to attend the launch in order to develop and implement an action plan that delivers the recommendations of the report. If you would like to comment or contribute to those efforts, then please contact the NIBB Network Managers.
