BIOCATNET - Network in biocatalyst discovery, development and scale up

Proof of Concept Funds

Objectives: The Proof-of-Concept awards will support short-term, precompetitive research projects and scoping exercises in order to de-risk future research and development projects, thereby increasing chances of success and opportunities for uptake of biocatalysis in industry. PoC awards will support high quality integrated research and development projects that bring together key academic and business components of the UK Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy community. Interactions can be either academic-only collaborations or academic and business collaborations but must be led by the academic partner. All projects will be expected to take into account the sustainability, social, economic and environmental aspects of the processes and products that are being developed.

Key Features of the Proof of Concept award

  • Project length: 1-12 months*
  • Total single project value up to £100,000 (fEC)*
  • Projects must be academic led
  • Funding available at 80% of fEC
  • Funding is only available to eligible partners; standard BBSRC eligibility rules will apply
  • Subcontracting to SME’s can be funded up to 20% of the total project costs, funded at 80% of fEC
  • Projects must apply BBSRC’s data sharing policy

*Proof-of-Concept funding for longer projects and/or those requesting funding towards the upper limit will require extraordinary justification, and wil be required to demonstrate not only that they represent value for money, but also have exceptional industrial support.

See Proof-of-Concept Project Guidelines for further details.

CURRENT AND FUTURE CALLS

BIOCATNET 4th Call for Proof-of-Concept Proposals
Status: OPEN Saturday 1st February 2017
Application deadline: 5pm Tuesday 18th April 2017

Summary

The 4th Call for BIOCATNET Proof-of-Concept funding, which will fund projects with a total combined value of £250,000, supporting projects in the Network subthemes of Biocatalyst Discovery, Development, and Scale Up.

This Call will be developed during the Industrial Biotechnology in the Development of Advanced Materials Workshop to be held 16th-17th January 2017 at The Principal Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, Manchester.

Members who are interesting in applying for funding are strongly encouraged to engage with industrial members to ensure that their proposal demonstrates the widest possible potential impact and industrial relevance. Funding will be available to BIOCATNET members to support short-term Proof-of-Concept projects, preferably within the range of 1-6 months duration. Proposals for long projects must be of the highest possible impact, and will therefore require exceptional justification.

Proof-of-concept projects are designed to stimulate collaborations between BIOCATNET members leading to further applications for funding. The awards will support short-term, precompetitive research projects and scoping exercises in order to de-risk future research and development projects, thereby increasing chances of success and opportunities for uptake of biocatalysis in industry. Awards will support high quality integrated research and development projects that bring together key academic and business components of the UK Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy community.
